Celebrating languages through fun, sound and silliness! Scottish Languages Week (2nd-6th February) is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the rich variety of languages spoken in Scotland and around the world. At Languagenut, we believe that learning a language should be fun, inclusive and confidence-building, and one of the best ways to do that is through tongue twisters!
Tongue twisters are more than just a laugh:

Tongue twisters help learners play with sounds, rhythm and pronunciation, without the pressure of getting everything “right”.Whether pupils speak a different language at home or are just starting out in French, Spanish or German, everyone can join in.

Classroom ideas for Primary
For younger learners, keep it playful and active.
Try this:
- Choose one tongue twister (in any language).
- Say it slowly together as a class.
- Speed it up… then try it with:
- whisper voices
- robot voices
- singing to a tune
Extension ideas:
- Clap or tap the rhythm
- Draw a picture to match the tongue twister
- Vote for the trickiest sound
Classroom ideas for Secondary
With older learners, tongue twisters can support deeper language learning.
Try this:
- Analyse which sounds are hardest and why
- Compare spelling vs pronunciation
- Challenge pupils to memorise and perform one confidently
Creative tasks:
- Write an original tongue twister in the target language
- Translate a simple English tongue twister and adapt it so it still “twists”
- Record audio and evaluate pronunciation
These activities are great for building speaking confidence in a low-pressure way.
