Reading aloud, listening, writing and why they start in Year 7.

The first results from the reformed French, German and Spanish GCSEs are in.

The grades matter, of course. But perhaps the more useful question for departments this term is: what can this cohort tell us about what next year’s pupils need?

There are three areas worth keeping in focus: reading aloud and pronunciation, listening, and writing. These aren’t things that can be fixed with a last-minute intervention in Year 11. They develop over time, through regular opportunities for pupils to hear language, say it, recognise it in unfamiliar contexts and use it independently.

That makes the next step less about doing more, and more about knowing where your pupils are and responding to what the data tells you.

Diagnose

Languagenut’s Gradebook now gives you a clearer picture of progress, with completion and average scores across classes, cohorts and the whole school. Gap analysis can help highlight shared misconceptions and areas that need attention.

Practise

Once you know the gap, you can target it.

This year we’ve added hundreds of new assignments, topic assessments, exam skills and full schemes of work for Edexcel GCSE French, Spanish and German, making it easier to give pupils focused practice rather than simply setting more work.

Apply

Pupils also need opportunities to use what they’ve learned.

Our new mock exams are aligned to the major exam boards, and pupils can now upload handwritten answers to open writing questions across all the languages we offer, with mark schemes alongside.

Reassess

Set. Monitor. Re-test.

It’s a simple cycle, but it’s one that can turn this year’s results into a clearer plan for next year.

And there’s plenty more in Languagenut to support that longer-term journey: listening at varied speeds, phonics and pronunciation practice, reading in unfamiliar contexts, rebuilt vocabulary games including Codebreaker and Avocado Smash, every assignable game on mobile, assignment folders, Google Classroom copy links, Calm Mode and a cheating detector to support independent work.

We’ve also added Primary Cantonese, Ukrainian and Tamil this year!

🎉 Coming soon to Languagenut: an AI tutor, a rebuilt scheme of work builder, new KS3 sentence content, and A Level updates for Spanish and German.

Because GCSE readiness isn’t an intervention. It’s the accumulation of what happens from Year 7 onwards.
