The first results from the reformed French, German and Spanish GCSEs are in.<\/span><\/p>\n

The grades matter, of course. But perhaps the more useful question for departments this term is: what can this cohort tell us about what next year\u2019s pupils need?<\/span><\/p>\n

There are three areas worth keeping in focus: reading aloud and pronunciation, listening, and writing. These aren\u2019t things that can be fixed with a last-minute intervention in Year 11. They develop over time, through regular opportunities for pupils to hear language, say it, recognise it in unfamiliar contexts and use it independently.<\/span><\/p>\n

That makes the next step less about doing more, and more about knowing where your pupils are and responding to what the data tells you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnose<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This year we\u2019ve added hundreds of new assignments, topic assessments, exam skills and full schemes of work for Edexcel GCSE French, Spanish and German, making it easier to give pupils focused practice rather than simply setting more work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pupils also need opportunities to use what they\u2019ve learned.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our new mock exams are aligned to the major exam boards, and pupils can now upload handwritten answers to open writing questions across all the languages we offer, with mark schemes alongside.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a simple cycle, but it\u2019s one that can turn this year\u2019s results into a clearer plan for next year.<\/span><\/p>\n
